  • The exercises in the Lengu game ‘Oral Motor Skills’ help strengthen the muscles of the lips and tongue.
  • In addition, these exercises help support the correct resting position of the lips and tongue.
  • The primary oral motor activities are eating (including biting and chewing food), drinking and speaking.
  • These activities require precise and co-ordinated movements of the lower jaw, tongue, lips, cheeks and soft palate.
  • Therefore, developing oral motor skills supports proper eating, drinking and pronunciation.

GAME OBJECTIVE:

  • training the tongue muscles;
  • training the lips and the orbicularis oris muscle;
  • stimulating relaxed lip closure;
  • recognising the correct resting position of the tongue.

PREREQUISITES:

  • The adult MUST read the game instructions and watch the video tutorials beforehand to ensure they can guide and correct the child if needed.
  • The exercises must be performed at a calm pace and followed EXACTLY as instructed.
  • The child must be at least three years old.
  • In the case of speech disturbance or dysphagia, it is essential to consult a speech therapist beforehand to assess the suitability and appropriateness of the exercises.

GAMEPLAY:

  • The player spins the game disc and performs the exercise indicated by the Lengu game arrow when it stops.
  • If the game disc continues spinning for too long, it can bestopped manually.
  • Exercise descriptions can be found in the table and video tutorials. It is important to perform the exercises as accurately and forcefully as possible.
  • Therefore, they should be performed using a mirror.
  • The number of repetitions is a guideline.
  • The number of repetitions can be increased or decreased based on the child’s ability.
  • For faster results, it is recommended to play for at least 10 minutes every day or until the mouth gets tired. Consistency and accuracy in performing the exercises are key. If any exercises proves challenging, don’t give up!
  • Keep trying and experimenting. Remember, practice makes perfect!
  • One of the 12 sectors on the game disc is the bonus sector.
  • The bonus is decided by the adult according to their wishes. For example, it could be a treat the child enjoys, a healthy snack, an active exercise or another agreed-upon reward.
